Just a handful of people still live in a village on Shengshan Island, which is east of Shanghai, that was once home to more than 2,000 fishermen. Every day hundreds of tourists visit Houtouwan, making their way on narrow footpaths past tumbledown houses overtaken by vegetation. The remote village, on one of more than 400 islands in the Shengsi archipelago, was abandoned in the early 1990s as first wealthy residents then others moved away, aiming to flee problems with education and food delivery.

A Tenggerese shaman prays for worshippers at Widodaren cave during the Tenggerese Hindu Yadnya Kasada festival on July 31, 2015, in Probolinggo, East Java, Indonesia. The festival is the main festival of the Tenggerese people and lasts about a month. On the 14^thday, the Tenggerese make the journey to Mount Bromo to make offerings of rice, fruits, vegetables, flowers, and livestock to the mountain gods by throwing them into the volcano’s caldera. The origin of the festival lies in the 15^thcentury when a princess named Roro Anteng started the principality of Tengger with her husband, Joko Seger, and the childless couple asked the mountain gods for help in bearing children. The legend says the gods granted them 24 children but on the provision that the 25^thmust be tossed into the volcano in sacrifice. The 25^thchild, Kesuma, was finally sacrificed in this way after initial refusal, and the tradition of throwing sacrifices into the caldera to appease the mountain gods continues today.

The moon rises over people gathered on Glastonbury Tor ahead of the next day’s Blue Moon on July 30, 2015, in Somerset, England. The full moon appearing on July 31 was what’s called a Blue Moon, which refers to the second of two full moons appearing in the same calendar month. The last time this happened was in 2012, and there isn’t due another until 2018.
